How word counting works
Words are found with your browser's built-in segmenter (Intl.Segmenter). Only word-like pieces such as words and numbers are counted, not punctuation, so mixed English, Thai and numbers are counted in one pass.
Why Thai word counting is different
Thai is written without spaces between words, so counting spaces gives the wrong answer. The segmenter uses a Thai dictionary to find word boundaries. Results can vary slightly between browsers and for names or new compound words, so treat the Thai count as the best estimate your browser can make.
Words vs characters
Characters are counted the way people see them on screen. A Thai consonant with its vowel and tone marks, an accented letter, a family emoji or a flag each count as one. “No spaces” removes only spaces, tabs and line breaks.
How reading and speaking times are estimated
The estimates come from the word count: about 230 words a minute for reading and 150 for speaking in English, and about 200 and130 for Thai text. Real speed depends on the reader and the content, so times are shown in approximate minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser. ARAIJA does not upload or store your text, and it is gone when you close or reload the page.
How are sentences counted?
Sentences end at punctuation such as . ? ! and at line breaks. Abbreviations like “Dr.” may add a sentence, and Thai sentences separated only by a space may be counted together.
How are paragraphs counted?
Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by at least one blank line. A single line break stays in the same paragraph.
Why is my character count different from other tools?
Many tools count code units, which split Thai marks and emoji into several pieces. This tool counts what you see, so the number can be lower.
